Oil & Gas Training

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a key contributor to safe and efficient operations in today’s oil and gas industry. Kopen Education Learning Centre (KELC) provide essential training for drilling and well services professionals with a requirement for International Certification from globally recognised institutions: International Well Control Forum (IWCF) and International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).

IWCF

Programme Objectives

This programme is designed for people in critical well control positions on drilling installations as well as onshore roles. The candidates will complete an IWCF accredited training course & taught according to IWCF syllabus.

Different levels of training require different examinations and are valid for varying lengths:
• Level 2 training – Consists of two written assessments. If passed, the certificate is valid for 5 years.
• Level 3 and 4 training – Consists of two written assessments and a practical assessment using simulator equipment. If passed, the certificate is valid for 2 years.

Programme Structure

• Level 2 – Drilling and Wells Personnel Basic Training (equivalent to old Introductory level)
• Level 3 – Available for any role expected to shut in a well (equivalent to old Driller level)
• Level 4 – Well Site Supervisor Training (equivalent to old Supervisor level)

Candidates can opt to undertake either Surface BOP operations or Combined Surface and Subsea operations.

Examinations

To pass the assessment and obtain a certificate, candidates must achieve a minimum mark of 70% in each section of the examination.

Each candidate is required to complete two written test papers which include multiple choice questions and Kill Sheet calculations. All candidates are allowed between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to complete this section, depending on the options taken.

Programme Objectives

This programme is aimed at people who are in critical well control positions during well intervention operations. Candidates will complete an accredited training course, taught according to IWCF syllabus, in order to prepare them for assessment.

Different levels of training are available and are valid for varying lengths of time:

• Level 2 training – If passed, the certificate is valid for 5 years.
• Level 3 and 4 training – If passed, the certificate is valid for 2 years.

Three different levels of Well Intervention Pressure Control training are available for different roles within the industry:
• Level 2 – Drilling and Wells Personnel Basic Training (new)
• Level 3 – Available for any role expected to shut in a well (equivalent to previous Level 1)
• Level 4 – Well Site Supervisor Training (equivalent to previous Level 2)

The certification standards in our programme are based on the pressure control knowledge required by service equipment operators and supervisory personnel in their jobs. These standards have been devised so that the measurement of candidate’s knowledge can be assessed systematically.

The following certification options are provided and are made up of compulsory and optional components:
• Completion Operations (compulsory)
• Completion Equipment (compulsory)
• Coiled Tubing Operations (optional)
• Wireline Operations (optional)
• Snubbing Operations (optional)

Candidates must attempt both compulsory components and one or more optional component in a combined certification programme. However, to obtain a combined certificate, candidates must pass each component they have been nominated for.

Content Includes:
• Equipment
• Completion
• Wireline
• Coiled tubing
• Snubbing

IADC Wellsharp

IADC WellSharp provide a new revolutionary well control training and assessment program. The new WellSarp program emphasizes rigorous training for every person with well control responsibilities, whether office or rig based.

Trainee gain more in-depth knowledge, well honed role specific skills and a greater confidence that they know what to do to prevent incidents or in the unforeseen event of a well control incident, respond swiftly and appropriately.

Assessment Process

A significantly improved assessment process will ensure integrity and international uniformity:
• Centralised electronic testing system, including random test generation.
• Immediate test results and feedback based on learning objectives.
• Independently proctored assessments.
• Strengthened instructor qualification requirements.

Industry Development

The WellSharp program which evolved from WellCap was revamped and revitalized at the request of the industry and it represents an industry-led effort to redefine well control training.

WellSharp helps to ensure that well control training providers adhere to a core curriculum developed by industry.
Through five course levels, WellSharp offers the building blocks for a comprehensive well control culture throughout an organisation:

• Awareness – designed for support personnel who do not have direct well control responsibilities but need to understand basic concepts.
• Introductory – essential well control knowledge for rig crews, including floorhands and other non-technical personnel.
• Driller – addresses practical well control skills, with a focus on detecting a kick and shutting in the well, for assistant drillers and drillers.
• Supervisor – designed for toolpushers, superintendents, drilling foremen and company men and focused on well kill procedures.
• Engineer – addresses well control issues that can be minimised or avoided throgh well design.
